Deadline is set in Doves Type, designed by Robert Green (2013–2022) from sorts recovered out of the Thames. Titles run at display sizes, up to 66px against a 20.5px text body. Inline code and technical matter are set in Berkeley Mono Variable, unboxed, with coloured formatting for language specifics where applicable.
Doves Type had no bold, no italic, and no small capitals; the austerity was Cobden-Sanderson’s entire argument. Emphasis is therefore letter-spaced true capitals at a reduced size. This allows for the type to be unmodified by browser-side peculiarities.
Pages follow a traditional book grid: asymmetric, the text column held to about sixty-three characters a line with a margin rail on the left, and open space to the right. Footnotes and the Edition record sit in that margin, set as side-notes beside their references on wide screens. Each Edition is calculated from a Git commit, under the premise that each revision of a page is a new, numbered setting.
The palette is two values and one pigment: paper (#F8F5F0), ink (#1C1814), and a red-lead vermilion (#C6431C), under a limited set of uses; initials, numerals, the edition line, links, and the cross in the footer. By night the paper darkens to lamplight (#211C17, ink #EDE5D8) and the vermilion warms to #E0592A. The Press fondness for all things orange survives in the vermilion’s temperature.
That the theme commits outnumber the content commits is the expected outcome for a journal whose author would sooner reset the type than finish the sentence.

with the Doves Deadline theme. The typefaces are served in WOFF2 and WOFF formats with font-display: swap, so the paper is never blank while the type arrives. The margin rail folds and the footnotes return to the text at 1180px; the measure narrows again at 900px and 480px. Publication dates derive from Git commit timestamps and front matter, formatted in RFC 3339. HTML is semantic, headers and minimal, and markup is validated to ensure a consistent delivery.
Content is maintained in version control and deployed by GitHub Actions, with each build queued behind the last so that updates are atomic. Hosting is provided by Ubuntu via Hetzner; DNS and load balancing by Cloudflare, which also handles SSL termination at the edge, with Let’s Encrypt via Certbot at the origin. Full content RSS feeds are generated for main content and all taxonomies. Standalone pages such as this one use the hideMeta parameter to suppress the edition apparatus.
